A little planning, a little preparation and a little prayer and Matt is ready. He shoots a text to Verity. Playing it cool and casual at first with Hey. Happy New Year's Eve! Doing anything tonight? Maybe he's jumping the gun but there's a good feeling in his gut. Already dressed, and already on his way.

majestic sea life!
"I might not ever be ready for the big time. And besides that, I like to keep my audience small, intimate. You won't have to worry." Matt tilts his head against her's for a moment. In church no one cares how you sound because it isn't a contest or about the voice just the words and the song. Here there's no sense of ceremony or seriousness, just being.
Now it's Matt's turn to tsk. "I didn't have a second choice." He'll do what he can, bit by bit, step by step to improve things.

Verity closes her eyes when he leans in, not quite sure what he's planning to do and not at all disappointed. This close to him she can enjoy his scent and heartbeat. "No... nothing to worry about with you here," she whispers. It shouldn't be so hard to admit that she feels safe. That she needs someone else to help her feel safe; maybe that's the real problem. She knows he's not staying, and for a moment, a ripple of pain steals her breath. Then the song changes, and only reinforces the appropriateness of being close.
"No?" She's surprised and pleased. "Then next time, you should call me sooner."
bit.ly/1VOJaQi they don't want you to have cute dolphins
Closer together, and a little turn and height difference aside they're more or less cheek to cheek. The music slowing with them really brings the whole world to a slower, dreamy speed.
"I will call you sooner." Matt chuckles and relaxes more as they sway. It's not really so much about intricate steps. Just moving to the music. "I didn't mind waiting at all. You're wonderful." Nothing to do with looks because he couldn't really tell. Knowing how she feels, moves and just is Matt says this in confidence.

Dancing cheek to cheek. Like in one of those old movies she used to study so intently. She finally found the magic.
This slow, close dancing may not be intricate, but it's intimate, which is a harder step for her to master. And it's so perfectly right. Normally, she'd explain that he needs to call to make sure she's not busy, but... well, she's rarely busy and there's not much she wouldn't reschedule for him. Theoretical possibilities seem too pedantic for the moment. Plus, she's blushing again, her cheek bright and warm against his. His confidence is a little contagious; what's he going to do with her when she's got her self-esteem back?
Apparently, what she's going to do with it is sing. Her voice is a light, fluttering thing; a baby bird not quite ready sure about leaving the nest. "And I want to wake up with the rain, Falling on a tin roof, While I'm safe there in your arms..."

Matt's lightly bristled. In his haste for putting the evening together he did pass up that detail. Verity's soft, warm cheek beside his own is still immeasurably enjoyable and so very cinematic. If he likes her now, it will be irrepressible when she's completely in her own element of confidence.
The first few notes he is quiet, hardly breathing and listening. Matt softly murmurs and shuts his eyes. He's heard this song before but never payed it any mind. Now that his whole world has telescoped he can focus. He slowly moves so that both arms can circle her waist and rest there.

The soft scraping touch of his bristles against her cheek makes her laugh quietly. Something about the fact that he was in a rush, too, makes everything better somehow. It makes him more human in a sweet and endearing way. Neither of them has to try to be something they're not, and that is so appealing to her.
The murmuring is too soft her for her to make out--a frustration soon forgotten. His arms are suddenly around her and her heart is racing. Her suddenly free hand brushes up his arm to his shoulder while she tries to figure out what to do. The last few words of the song trail off and she lowers her head just enough to rest it on his shoulder while they dance, her hands moving up and back to lace together behind his neck.
oh my heart so cute
Laughing and staying where she is means that whatever it is making her make that adorable sound it's fine. Better than fine. Just think if they were to actually try?
Matt's heart speeds up with hers. Maybe she can hear it, maybe she can't. "That was beautiful." A little song just for him. How did it get so comfortable so fast here? It's like another dance move, un-orchestrated just felt through the cues of song. He hopes the band wants to take it slow again and give him another small forever to live comfortably in.
You know, technically, Ver could be a Disney princess.
"I, um. Thank you." A song for him, just for them really. She doesn't sing. She's never sung a song like that to anyone before. What was she thinking? Nothing except how much she wants him to be happy. He is going to ruin her and she'll love every minute. All of this is his fault. His wonderful fault. Even if the next song were uptempo, she wouldn't be inclined to move away from him. Lucky for them that the fates are kind.
befriends strange animals, is colorful and independent, cursed-ish i believe it!
"Thank you," he presses. And if that doesn't sound like happiness in his voice than the ever so slight tilt of his head against hers where it lays just might. The fates are so very kind. Matt gives a little prayer of thanks if they or God will hear. Even slower. All they could do if she truly wanted was to just step from one foot to the next. "And thank you for coming, Verity. I mean it." His voice is soft and close to her ear, just for her and no one else. It's not a song but it's the truth.
bit.ly/1RqSPOm And parent issues. Can't forget the all-important parent issues.
Oh, but he's talking again. Thinking can wait. "Mm. Okay. We can be mutually grateful?" She doesn't lift her head, talking into his neck and trusting he'll hear her. They can dance properly again later; right now, swaying with him is more than enough for her. The slow tempo and gentle music are so soothing. "You don't have to thank me for wanting to spend time with you, Matt. I love spending time with you." It's song enough for her, and poetry, too.
oh boy yes. u_u there is that.
"We can be. Mutually," he laughs a little. These ears of his can hear her just fine. "I just wanted to be sure to tell you."
And there was the villain with amazing hair screwing with her family...
The puff of breath from his laugh makes a few stray hairs brush against her neck, which in turn makes her shiver. She never knew that anything bordering on ticklish like that could be so delightful. "And now I know. I won't forget." As if forgetting were even an option. "Thank you for asking me. I'm... I'm really glad I'm not alone tonight. Starting a new year alone," physically and emotionally separated from everyone she cares about, "would have been..." devastating. She trails off, falling silent for a moment before changing the subject slightly. "Easiest heroing gig you've ever had, I bet."
belatedly that bunny omfg
Matt feels her shiver and he smiles. "There was no way you were going to spend it alone. Even if you said no I was prepared to at least get you a snack." He can't always accurately gauge her reactions but he rubs her arm gently thinking the shiver is because she's cold. "Is it heroism if I get something out of it?" It's a real question here.
inorite? bit.ly/1Pk3a8a
She's not cold, but she's not minding the gentle treatment either. "So determined to take care of me." The teasing is gentle and aimed as much at herself for enjoying it so much. She hopes she'll get to return the favor. "Oh, I think every hero gets something out of it. A sense of satisfaction or self-worth. An easing of the sense of guilt." Having been adopted by an Avenger, she's put a fair bit of thought into these things. What made him go and be a hero when she ran away from the chance. "Are firefighters any less heroic when they run into a burning building because they get gear, training, and a paycheck?"
http://bit.ly/1VVp1Iu
All the clobbering of crooks still leaves him very gentle. It's a skill. "Only if you'd let me." Matt smiles and stops enough to give her a pretend scolding head shake.
It's an interesting theory. One he considers because of her presentation. "I think they're more heroic because some people pick and choose their battles. Firefighters can't. They will go when they're called" Some People is pretty clear.
Pile of cutes can only be answered one way: http://www.pusheen.com/image/129104381856
"Only if I get to return the favor." She's quick to pounce on that opening. The head shake gets a little huff of breath against his neck. If he's going to be mischief like that, she's obligated to pretend she disapproves.
It's not surprising he doesn't agree; she's just glad he's thinking about it instead of dismissing her out of hand. "You have to allocate your resources. There's nothing wrong with making sure you're still around to fight again tomorrow. I'd rather you were."
pusheeeeeen <3 i love it so much omg
"Well..." Yeah, he can try and sound like it's something he'll think over. "I think I can allow that." Matt can keep it together just enough to shorten the shiver her breath on his neck makes. Could have been a chill.
All the respect goes to law enforcement and the emergency services. All those sirens that were around him in his life. "That's something I need to remind myself sometimes." To say in the least.
Their slow song can't last forever. He wishes so much that it could. "Would you like a drink or to keep dancing? I think there's time yet before midnight."
Pusheen wins everything! :D
She hums softly in amusement at his playing. "If you're sure. I wouldn't want to overburden you with concern and cookies." Because there will be cookies. That almost goes without saying. "And reminding you to take care of yourself." That will be part of the bargain too. None of her friends are really safe from this kind of thing.
The end of the song and switch to something more up-tempo makes her grumble quietly, and she doesn't answer him straight away. He's warm and she's comfortable. "A drink would be nice, please. There will still be time for both after midnight. I'm not going to turn into a pumpkin."
i want to give pusheen all the things.
"I've yet to feel that kind of overburden so..." he doesn't know what it's like to approve or disapprove of it. "Cookies though." He laughs softly and leans his head against her's. "It really doesn't sound so bad out loud."
No answer is tolerable when she stays where she is. The room is spinning back into motion and joy. He too could grumble. "Okay," meaning they must be in another position. Matt lightly presses a kiss to the top of her head as he slowly slips his arms from her put offers a hand. "I'd still ensure your safety home. Pumpkin or not."
Everyone does! That's why she's got Facebook stickers.
"Mm, but I have not yet begun to fuss," she warns with a smile. He may be laughing and comfortable about it now, but that could change.
Aww, he moved. Sads. The little kiss is a pleasant surprise. His hand isn't empty for long and she doesn't move far from his side. "You'd protect me from anyone with an appetite for unseasonal pie? How gallant." She knows he'd protect her from worse than that, but jokes are easier than talking about feelings. Easier, but maybe less fair. She's working on it.
She stays quiet until they're waiting their turn at the bar. "I don't always need protecting," she tells him quietly, "but it's nice to know you're there when I need to feel safe."
I've seen a 70lbs pusheen doll. i didn't buy it ;-;
"Don't hold back on my account." Laughing and comfort for now. Any trip to paradise is going to have turbulence. Or...wherever they're going. Matt just knows he wants in.
His fingers close carefully around hers as they step away from the dance floor. "See? Chivalry isn't dead, just protecting gourds." That's the better joke than insisting she's gourd-ous. Smooth move, Murdock.
"Right. Just... kind of comes naturally for me. I don't mean to say anything like you're not capable." Matt says a grin but... he means it.
That's excessive. How big was it?
"Don't say I didn't warn you," she retorts with a smirk. Wherever they're going, she doesn't want to let go, but she's so scared of his leaving later when she's gotten used to the idea of his being around. It's easier to lose people in the beginning, before you need them. Isn't it?
And then he's distracting her from those thoughts, making her laugh and holding her hand, and suddenly she sounds so foolish. Even to herself. (The "gourd-ous" joke would have made her laugh too.) She shouldn't worry so much about the future; it's not like she has one. Only the eternal now of living in a place that is nowhere and everywhen.
"I know." She gives his hand a little reassuring squeeze. "I just wanted it to be clear that some times I'll want it more than others." Now is a 'want' time. She's not quite ready to admit to needing it, but boy, does she ever.
It was as wide as it was long so maybe four feet?
"I, Matthew Murdock, on this day--December thirty first, do acknowledge that Miss Verity Willis warned me," to the imaginary court reporter. He's staying because it feels more like there's a piece of himself here. It can't be in Hell's Kitchen at the same time. There's no way he could sleep there the same way he does here.
They can be foolish together. Who cares. He doesn't. They're still hand in hand and he gives her's a squeeze. "Okay. You just tell me." Whatever she needs... is what he'd say if a bartender didn't come up to them. Matt asks for a scotch because it's a special occasion.
That's not a doll, that's a piece of furniture. Or a lifestyle choice.
"We should have that entered into the record. Or notarized. Something official." The teasing would go better if she knew more about the court system probably. But if they were both legal experts they'd have to be rivals too often to be friends. This way is better; they have the places where they overlap and the ones where they complete each other.
Usually, she'd care about being foolish. Usually, she wouldn't be here at all. Usually, she wouldn't be mentally cursing an attentive bartender. She orders a glass of merlot and waits for the bartender to turn away before looking up at Matt again. "I thought you showed up tonight because you already knew."
or a member of the family
"Tomorrow. First thing." I mean, only if she'd really want to. It gives Matt an idea to contact her the next day with details on an imaginary contract. That doesn't sound like he's asking for much, does it?
Matt turns a little, leaning his free elbow on the bar. His thumb really likes the texture of the top of her hand. "I had a hunch but... hunches aren't always right. Besides, I'd like to hear you tell me things. I like the sound of your voice."
Well now I need one.
seriously, lounging on a big ol pusheen sounds so nice ;-;
