Hopefully he's come up the stairs. The weather really must not be very good for those lungs of his. It seems that they're much over due for a chat. With the ever helpful Siri, Matt gives the one and only Steve Rogers a ring.
"Hey, Matt. Hope I wasn't bothering you or anything earlier. How are you?"
Steve sounds much better than he did on the voicemail. Outside is rough on him lately. There's a sound of something snapping. Matchsticks? Chopsticks? Strange.
"Steve! Hey, buddy. You're no bother. I'm good. Happy New Year!"
The pang of worry subsides. Matt also considers that if there were a real emergency there'd be a chance Steve would reach out to him. That'd be worth checking out.
Steve shouldn't try to lie. He's really not very good at it. And if something bad happened, Matt can rest easily knowing he'd be one of the first people Steve called.
"I wanted to wait until the Holidays were over before I checked in is all."
"Oh yeah? That's great. I've been uh...setting up things. Trying to find a pace in these parts."
Any lies told are best told over the phone. You can't detect heartbeats or get a full sense of muscle tension. And really voices are distorted to a degree over the line. Matt would believe about anything Steve would tell him right now.
"You didn't have to. It was mellow. Kinda...kinda went to a party for the new year." Kinda meaning totally did. Yes.
"You seem like the type that's good with the dames. I'm not surprised." Steve actually chuckles a bit there. Does it sound sad? Phones suck for picking things apart.
A pause that's longer than it maybe needs to be. Steve might have gotten distracted form the phone before he speaks up again.
"Were....were you at all able to find a church around here? It...turns out most of my friends are...not...what you'd call religious." Some took the question better than others, but. Yeah. No luck here.
"It's a come and go thing. I couldn't even begin to tell you how it works because I still sometimes don't know how." Matt laughs a little back. "There's a girl for you, Steve." It's what Foggy would tell Matt in the rare times that Matt was the odd one out. And really his own relationships are few and far between.
"I found a place, I think. Small but hey, serves it's purpose. I did notice that we're in a big minority."
"What? Oh! Oh--no. Wasn't nothin' like that. most of the folks I know around here are ladies." Not that he has a chance with any of them, but that's beside the point. "Reminded me of somethin' else, was all."
Things he probably should forget, but can't.
"..Yeah. Makes it hard to confess. Or to...talk about much of anything close to me in that way. Folks don't believe here...can't say I blame 'em but..." Steve clears his throat. "Anyway, I was wondering if you'd like to meet up? Show me the place maybe? A-and if you still had the spare bible, I'd be awful grateful. I'm getting cooking lessons from Verity, so if you swing by to get me, I'll treat you to breakfast sometime?"
The good thing about being on the phone is that when Matt stumbles he doesn't have to hide his own expressions. Jeez, Murdock. Nothing is going on but you're feeling mighty cocky. He clears his throat and laughs at himself. "Reminded you of what?" Sorry, Steve. Matt hasn't picked up just yet that many a thing is still a tender subject.
"Hard to confess, hard to just be a little." But he is still going to try. "Oh yes. Let's for sure. I can show you my place and the church. We can get a schedule going for study too."
"Sounds great. Any requests for breakfast? I can make eggs, okay biscuits, and breakfast potatoes pretty well. Otherwise there's toast and generic stuff."
Getting to a different topic seems to cheer Steve up.
"Hehe, toast is pretty amazing, but I'd have to be much worse off than I am if I was getting cooking lessons to make it." Steve rolls his eyes but he's almost laughing now.
See you then, Matt.
((Would you like to make a thread or shall I? I won't be up much later, but I can at least get something up before I go, if you'd like.))

Someone's a bit wheezy. Must have just come home up those stairs.
I hope you had a happy holiday. Are you still up for bible study? It's okay if not--I just..Well. I could use a Good Word or two.

"I appreciate it. When would you like to meet up?"

Hearing Steve perk up is very important. Matt's at ease again.
"Never underestimate toast, Steve." Or the power of breakfast. If he wasn't in 100% before, he sure is now.
"Let's say seven?"
