It's a typical day at Nelson and Murdock. Matt has one ear listening to his reader, the other open to the sounds of Foggy typing, Karen's fingertips rasping against the cardboard files. The place is more furnished, possibly the most office like incarnation yet.
Matt's fingers pause and he stops the reader. Surely he's mishearing. That's a heartbeat and a foot tread that he knows and knows well.
So it was 78 here today... NYC would be even worse.
It is an atypical day at Nelson and Murdock because they have a new visitor; a pink-haired woman opens the door to the office and peeks in, hesitating briefly before coming inside. She's dressed for the unseasonably warm weather in that she's wearing a floral print dress that somehow manages to coordinate with her tattoos and her hair. There's a basket of good-smelling things under one arm and a bag dangling from the hand that's also holding the door.
Ver gives Karen a faint but friendly-enough smile. "Hi. Um, is Matt here?"
Now and again there is the lingering figure behind the glass. Foggy has differed the task of greeting to Karen. He still leans and looks from his chair. This is not a drill! She smooths her own cotton dress before sprinting to help with the door. It's a feat in kitten heels. "Hi. I got it. Please come in." She clears her throat a little. "Yes, Matt's here."
"Oh, thank you." She'll maneuver herself and her goodies inside, looking around briefly before focusing on Karen again. "Karen, right? I'm Verity. He's...?" Okay, let's be honest, process of elimination (yes she sees you there Foggy) makes it pretty obvious which office is Matt's, but, manners. Best manners today because these people are important to Matt. She wants, needs them to approve of her.
this is what you call an avocado roll. wait for it. #1
Before Karen can open her mouth to say anything, (the good news is that she's smiling because this is The Verity) Foggy enters the welcoming. "You're the one that's turned my sad, lonely buddy's life around!"
Her smile brightens at recognition and her heart leaps. The talk about Matt's new flame hasn't been exclusively among the boys. Come on, he has been humming and whistling every so often after all. And now it's very, very interesting to see the lady now in the flesh. Soft hair, he said. (It seems so.) And pink for certain. The tattoos he mentioned too but Karen wonders if the meaning is wholly lost on Matt. Verity looks like an artsy city type.
Being steamrolled by Foggy's enthusiasm doesn't dampen Karen's efforts to make sure this runs well. "Yes. It's great to meet you, Verity." Seeing that her guest has their arms full she offers both. "Did you need a hand?" Like it or not she's taking something to make it easier.
3/3 ugh they're all so cute i am giving myself cavities
Suspense can't last so very long. Matt is on his feet. He was halfway to standing when the rush came in. For a second he takes his time crossing the room. This isn't the hellraising vigilante or the assertive, gifted New Yorker... this is blind Matt Murdock the mild mannered lawyer. And he's acclimating to the sensation of having everyone he cares the most about standing in one room.
"....Hi." Subdued as it might be in words he couldn't be smiling any wider as he holds a hand out hoping to get a hold of one of hers if he can.
You're a goof, bb. <3 and next time tell me it's a threesome. :P
A warm welcome does a lot to calm her nerves, and Verity's smiling brightly now. "I'm pretty sure it was the other way around, but yes, I'm the weirdo who's been feeding him lately. It's nice to meet you, too." She'd offer to shake hands, but, well.
Karen's read is pretty accurate: Verity's no artist, but she loves art and the city. She could have more piercings to really make her point, but she'd rather be subtle. (Yeah, right.) "Yes, thank you. I brought treats because my meeting this morning got canceled so I went home and stress baked. I hope everyone's hungry."
If Karen would be so kind as to take the bag? She'll find it's got several large thermoses in it that are cold to the touch. And if Foggy decides to be gentlemanly, he'll find the basket's got several food containers, and oddly, a small white vase and branches of pussy willows. Anyone hoping she was normal is free to be disappointed now.
As soon as she's got a hand free it slides into Matt's and she gives his a squeeze. This subdued act of his is going to take some getting used to, but for now, she finds it cute and amusing. "Hi, honey. I hope you don't mind I dropped in like this?"
She's gained celebrity status. Who would believe. "I'll put this in the kitchen." That modest little kitchen they have with the coffeemaker Matt has told Verity so very much about. "You've solved our problem with what to figure out for lunch. Thank you!" They have only just met and she's feeding them. Karen's soup took a build up.
She busies herself with setting them out, kids still on. Foggy has a grip on the baskets but waits where he is. Karen eventually opts to take them from him first chance she gets.
"Pleeeease don't tell me that you've bought into his picky eating. There's an iron stomach in there." Once Karen takes the baskets Foggy reaches for Verity's hand. It's a warm, two handed shake.
She's pretty! Of course she's pretty. Matt and his sixth sense for attractive women. It's uncanny. And the smell coming out of her bounty is another big plus. But...pussy willows? Foggy eyes the vase and branches as they drift away. Before anything else he is compelled to say, "thanks for the eats! We were probably going to starve over options."
Matt Murdock is not embarrassed by his friends. There is still a redness that's trying to climb through his skin. He'll bury it with leaning into kiss Verity. "I don't mind at all. It's a great surprise." His hand squeezes her's.
"I know we're all on the hungry end of the spectrum but mind telling us what we're in for?" Because Foggy might inhale it before identifying it. Just like an Indian buffet. And there is a very wonderful chance to show one of Verity's many talents. He doesn't need to see anyone's face to know that being there, seeing her and him together is filling in all the blanks.
"You're welcome. Thank you for helping me not overfill my kitchen." Oh, handshakes now, okay, she can do that. Foggy is just as friendly as Matt has said, which makes Verity relax. She has a feeling she's going to like Foggy tremendously. "Not picky, but thoughtful. We prefer to eat good food, sure, but who wouldn't?"
And then there's a kiss, which is lovely as always, but they're in public so she'll try to keep it short and sweet. Plus, he's blushing, which makes her wonder. "Of course. I made Reuben hand pies, a shaved asparagus and strawberries salad, rosemary focaccia, and chocolate-crust blood orange tarts. And I brought some kombucha and lemonade. I know you have a plethora of choices around here, so I hope it's not too disappointing."
While she's explaining she laces her fingers in with Matt's, and though she's trying to look at everyone and include them in the conversation, it's pretty clear she's only got eyes for one person in the room.
Her kitchen and Matt's stomach are grateful. He would find a means to make sure that it would be devoured in a timely manner. Might end up with an over stimulated stomach. Let them all share the feeling of being big bellied full up care.
Foggy loves the feeling. He also loves holding Verity's hand. He'd be going in for a hug before she knows it. Matt does. He hopes there will be a chance to warn. For now his attentions drift from Verity to the food now knowing what he's in for there is no stopping him.
Matt nuzzles her ear. "Thank you," he really has no mind to them being close to one another. He's crazy about her. Always thinking of her and suddenly right up out of the blue here she is. There can be a group conversation though it's divided attentions.
"Come and sit with me a little. You can see my desk." And the big boring thing that it is. It's an excuse to have her close.
Matt's stomach is the part she cares about pleasing the most. Well, between anything of him and anything else ever. It's an easy contest. A big lunch and a lethargic afternoon might be just what the doctor ordered. (This is a proper, good doctor, of whom Verity approves.)
Verity's hands are pretty nice; they're soft and she takes care of them. And he's welcome to keep holding it if he wants, but it'd get awkward after a while. Hugs she'll handle. Even surprise hugs. She's come prepared to handle things. Going to get food is a smart play for him.
Especially with that ear nuzzling happening. Now Verity's kind of forgotten there are other people around; hopefully, they won't hear that delighted little gasp Matt's coaxed from her. "Okay. Can I look at the rest of your office too?" It won't be boring to her. It's him, it's parts of him put on display. That's the sort of thing she pays attention to. As excuses to get her close go, it's a good one because it doesn't feel like an excuse to her at all.
(Proper doctors that have a real idea of what nutrition is about would be in favor of Verity and all of her endeavors with organic foods. The only health care professional that Matt has seen in quite some time is Claire... one of these days he needs to do something about that.)
Matt can't and won't be bothered by anything with her reacting to him like that. Other people? Here? Right now? "Sure, of course. The grand tour." Having passed around their modest walls over and again, he takes her hand. They are nice, soft and always a texture he enjoys. Touching her here where he spends hours on less exciting heroics is an unexpected pleasure.
The carpet has finally settled. The smell of paint has become muted. "Foggy and Karen have had the biggest say on decor so... don't blame me for that." Which means there are motivational posters with glaciers, kittens and eagles.... not together in the same frame luckily.
(Yes, Matt needs to see a doctor. But how to explain all his injuries and scars? They're going to need to think about that. And eat more good food in the meantime.)
"Mm, lucky me." The tour's a lucky break too, but mostly she's enjoying the feel of their hands together. He's soft and lovely to touch. Even the rough parts are soft and lovely to her. Holding hands is a good start, a safe way to make sure she's paying some attention to the office when she's supposed to be. The motivational posters get a few amused sounds.
"You know, motivational posters are the number three reason I refused to work in an office for so long?" Verity leans her head on his shoulder while they're stationary for a moment. "They're Foggy's contribution, I'm guessing."
(His past injuries, fractures and scars those are going to be hard to sweep under the rug hence his procrastinating. Until then, eating well and being more careful have been enough. For now.)
"It's not nearly as big as it looks." Or so he's told. "This isn't exactly a lobby but this is our entry way. There should be a poster with eagles on it. Right there on your side. Yes, they are Foggy's contribution." And there is a trio of eagles staring at them. Perseverance with a subtle something about pride. That is mighty important.
"I think I'd feel something similar if I could see it every day." He laughs and gives her hand a squeeze. The kitchenette is to the left. Karen pokes her head out a little to smile at Verity. Matt leads Verity to the conference room so that Foggy and Karen can finish up there. "This is were we meet with clients or have our crunch sessions." Right now it's empty.
(Maybe they can find a doctor who understands the lifestyle. That would probably require going to SHIELD, though...)
"I think it's the perfect size," she assures him softly. "Lobbies and waiting rooms are impersonal and make people feel disconnected from the people they're trying to see. Being right on hand like this will make your clients feel more welcome." The eagle poster might work better if the eagles didn't look so grumpy in the snow.
She laughs too. "Yeah, you're pretty lucky you can't see them." It's a dangerous joke to make, but she's pretty sure they're comfortable enough together to get away with it. If they're not, well, she'll make her apologies repeatedly and mostly in private until he's forgiven her. "Your office is really nice. Lots of windows and light, it'll make people feel better. Good choice."
this log is a direct excuse to cherry pick DD scenes to creep in on N&M. ilu ;-;b
(Involving major organizations, questionable and legal alike, are things that really need careful consideration. He's a strong, healthy lad right now. So. The priority isn't around the top at this juncture.)
"And the one with the bigger space just... wasn't in the budget of our dream." Matt smiles at the logic anyway. He laughs. "We wanted offices with windows specifically. L and Z just really felt stifling." For many reasons as he's explained a time or two before.
Dangerous? Oh no. She gets a laugh that he tries to down play. They pass Foggy's office, door open with dinosaurs on the desk. A trash can that looks and smells like it is going to need to be taken out before the day is over. He has a bobble head of Dwight from the Office. It's a cruise by. "I had a good feeling about this place." Verity hits the nail on the head.
Karen's desk is between Matt's and Foggy's. Funny enough she gets the most of the light from the windows. Her desk is neat. She's got a plastic flower that sways in sunlight. Matt's grown accustom to it's repetitive squeak. Her coffee is getting cold.
"It's not terribly decorative. No place I have is... I hate to tell you."
(So that's no to SHIELD and the mob. Good to know. She'll keep plugging away at her alchemy lessons.)
"It's a good space for you. You've all got your own areas to work in, but you aren't isolated." Keep saying things like that, Mattie, and you'll find out just how much optimism she can wring out in your defense. Protip: it is all the optimism.
He should never try to downplay his laughs. She loves them too much and they are too precious. Foggy's office gets a glance; dinosaurs, trash can, references she doesn't understand. She'll try and remember the dinosaurs when it's time to help Matt buy him presents.
Karen's desk doesn't give away much. The flower, though, Verity can run with that when the time comes. And there's time to pick up on other things before she's helping Matt with his Christmas shopping. "Well, you're still settling into these new places. It takes time to decorate really well. And lucky for you, I've been getting a crash course in decorating lately, so... we'll work on it."
If he wants to let her help. She knows it might be overstepping to assume she'll be allowed to just show up with things and start putting holes in walls. On the other hand, she already has ideas. Little ones, cozy ones. Things everyone should like, or at least tolerate, but mostly they're for Matt. (Marci can do Foggy's office, and Karen's capable of taking care of her own space.)
(Too many involved and too far on one end of the spectrum or another. And really, too many people at risk of knowing. Matt still is very much in the heroic shadows as much as he can be in this neck of the multiverse. Any and all help from those he trusts most is appreciated of course, Verity's that extra element of TLC that puts him at ease... that's before even considering her alchemy or magic.)
"Yes, and who knows. Someday we might be some place bigger. We're small but mighty." That he believes. There's sunshine in her tone and all good and true points. She really is so sweet to him. Good food and a good, sly pep talk. It's like she had an idea of what they needed here. "Thank you," her hand gets a kiss. "I still have so much to learn from the master. I'm very lucky."
Their tour finally leads to Matt's own office. "Please don't stifle your yawn. I'm working on it, I promise." There's a desk, a shelf and two chairs. He leans on his desk which is scattered with pending paperwork. "Here we are." The light from the window is the most decorative thing, really. "My apartment is a little better. I think that's worth seeing." Sometime. And soon.
He listens to her move, speculating at what she's looking at. "What brings you to the neighborhood? I know you didn't come for a tour. Maybe the view?"
(They'll keep the circle small. But it will eventually have to include a real medical professional.)
"It's the right size for right now," she amends. "It's good to grow." Where is this sunshine coming from she doesn't understand. Except it's obvious, it's all his fault. He's just going to have to learn to live with that. The kiss on her hand is so gentlemanly, and yet so intimate. Her knees go weak for a moment and she catches herself on his arm. "Mm. Pretty sure I'm the lucky one. But if you're lucky too, even better."
The tour finishes exactly where she wants to be. "Oh, honey, I love it. You're comfortable here, and that's what matters most." She looks around, taking in everything--the books on the shelf, the pattern of scratches on the corner of the desk. All of it. In the end she claims his desk chair like a throne, half sprawled and entirely inviting. "I want to see your apartment. It's only right, since I have a key now."
"The view, yes. I came to see you." No reason to pretend otherwise. "I miss you and I decided it's time we start carving out more chances to see each other. Since you're so busy, it's only fair I come to you sometimes."
(Eventually. Yes. Matt is holding off for now. Hospitals are one of his least favorite places in all the world for one. And another he doesn't want to fathom what kind of things would be uncovered from previous injuries to perhaps unknown complications due to his heightened senses.)
His arms are hers to do whatever she wishes. "Good to grow, that's the phrase I was looking for." Two more employees tops and they'll have to get another office or have Karen's space divided into quadrants. Matt has mulled that over. You're supposed to think about the future when it comes to businesses, when it comes to life. He is still learning that. Verity makes the future seem more real.
Matt lightly pushes the door, it doesn't close but is more closed than when they started. The blinds are drawn but not obscuring them. Just enough privacy. "That chair is the best place to be." Specially cushioned, ergonomically correct. It sounds nice under Verity. She sounds inviting so he has to come closer.
His expression softens, is brow relaxes and tension eases from his jaw. "I miss you too." A confession like that is more meaningful in person rather than text. He removes his glasses. "It's very fair. I just hope to not bore you with this part." Fingers vaguely gesture around. Matt perches on his own desk, back to the door and the window to their lobby. Foggy and Karen are in the conference room and trying to play it cool and not steal glances.
(The longer he waits, the worse it'll get. Or maybe not, since he's dating a healer. All those long backrubs can have some added benefits.)
Someday, he'll need a bigger office, yes. Verity's absolutely convinced that he and Foggy can build the next great New York law firm. But that's no reason to not decorate this place. It's like the advice to dress for the job you want, not the job you have: decorate for the business you want. When it comes around, it'll be more inclined to stay.
A little privacy can go a long way. When Matt moves closer she reaches out with a foot to brush against his leg. "You never bore me, my dearest. I love you. I love all of you." She emphasises this by leaning forward and reaching up. His tie will make an excellent grip to pull him down into her lap for a kiss. His chair really is comfortable and she's not ready to give it up just yet; plus, they're safer this way. Just by a little. "I love that you have a job and an office and a secretary who's gossiping about me with your best friend. I love that you have your... charitable work. I love when you come home and let me hold you and kiss everything better." Each sentence is punctuated with a kiss. For emphasis, and for love.
"And if loving you means I have to wait a little longer for you to come home some nights, it makes the time we have together all the more precious. So I'm thinking, a couple times a week, I'll come steal you away for lunch to make up for it."
(The risk is indeed greater the longer the wait carries on. Though with a healer girlfriend and a friendly, dutiful nurse he is in the best condition he can be considering. Those backrubs are indeed magical.)
Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home. Matt's ambition is for more, but he would never dismiss the comfort that this small office space has for him. This is their home. This is where something big starts. Their principles and practices will make Nelson and Murdock an institution that Thurgood Marshall would be proud of.
The pressure of her foot and the pull directly coincide with the size of his smile. He's pulled, so happily pulled to balance just enough on the desk. The rest of him, on the inside, is falling deep into her kisses living from one to the next. It's been days. Almost a whole week hasn't it? Matt sighs out happily close to her mouth. "I love you." Three little words to her confession, it may never seem to be said enough. "I'm sorry I've been away. I think about you all day." Now she's getting a dose of her own medicine as he slips from his perch on the desk to brace his arms on the chair. "What's she doing? How did she do her hair today? Is she happy?" Each question Verity could answer... only after she's dealt with her own barrage of kisses.
"You can't steal me if I want to go with you." Leave it to a lawyer to point out. "I already know that lunch will be delicious."

❤◦.¸¸. ◦✿
ᕙ༼*◕_◕*༽ᕤ
" Ü "
(★^O^★)
